cladding #11

More progress on the east elevation cladding.

Over the last month or so we’ve had enough dry weather to progress the east elevation cladding. The process is the same as the other elevations, with the same type of cuts needed around the window reveals. Whilst these look relatively straightforward from the front, these notches are in face bevelled back in two directions to allow a mitred detail with the cladding that will be forming the reveal linings to both the window jambs and soffits! We did this with an initial cut on our large compound mitre saw, and then finished them off by hand with a Japanese handsaw and sometimes a sharp knife!

We’ve been working up from the bottom to the top, which is much easier as you can sit the board you are nailing directly on top of the board below with a plastic shim between. On two of the other elevations, where the cladding went the opposite direction, we sometimes had to work downwards, which is much harder with only 2 people, as the boards can be quite heavy when they are close to full length, and need to be pushed up against the board above before nailing by hand.

On the left hand side you can see the rainwater pipe with it’s cover - more on this in a later post!

In these two images you can start to see the junction with the south elevation taking shape…

Finally, here are some shots of the adjoining south elevation with no scaffold to obscure the view!
