shelves

This week I spent time making some bespoke shelves.

This week’s task was to make the bespoke shelves that will sit above the built-in trunk storage on the first floor. We have decided to make these as bespoke shelves so that we can make the timber boards on the shelves align with the timber boarding that lines the adjacent walls.

Here are some photos walking through the steps….

We are using a core of MDF lined on both sides (as both will be visible) with more of the timber boarding. This gives the shelves a good depth, and allows the boards to be fastened to something other than the rear face of the other side.

I have screwed and filled the boards on both sides, and in the last photo you can see the pre-mitred edges with some wood glue ready to receive the front cover strip.

Here are some shots of the shelves ready to go in, and then fitted into position, with screwed on front edges filled and sanded ready for decorating.
